Getting Your Roommate to Scram

Getting Your Roommate to Scram

Question: I'm a guy living with a female. She's not a friend, just a roommate to split the space and bills with. I'm actively dating and feel uncomfortable having a girl over for Netflix and chill when my roommate's around. How do I politely tell her not to be at home some evenings? Should I even do that? We never set house rules.

Answer: Please stop saying 'Netflix and chill.' It's cheesy and no girl you're dating will want your liaisons described as such.

No, you cannot simply tell your roommate not to be home. It's where she lives and her comfort shouldn't come second to your own. Not even in the quest of getting laid.

Your best bet at clearing the space is to fill your roommate in on your plans. Casually mention that you're having a lady friend over to hang out, being sure to include the intended date and time. If your roommate wishes to spare herself third-wheeldom, she'll make herself scarce all on her own.

Should your roommate end up being home, it means that she doesn't care—and you shouldn't either. Invite your lady friend over and proceed as normal. If things seem like they'll take a private turn, your movie guise can be continued on a laptop in your bedroom.

The beauty of closed doors is that, once behind them, you can pretend your roommate's not even there (and she you).
