When Meeting the Parents Poolside
Question: I’m going on vacation with my boyfriend’s family, who I’m meeting for the first time. We’ll be spending time on the beach and I can’t decide if it’s OK to wear a bikini or not. My boyfriend thinks a bikini is no big deal but I’m not sure I want to be having “getting to know you talk” while practically naked. Should I buy a one piece for safety’s sake?
Answer: Well, how concerned are you about tan lines? You can play it safe and come home with a pale belly, or become a bronzed goddess, but risk offending the maybe-future-in-laws.
If your boyfriend thinks it’s no big deal, then it’s probably no big deal. Then again, men tend to think many things are no big deal (watch out that he doesn’t absentmindedly grope your bathing suit-clad butt in front of his parents), and you don’t want his mom to refer to you as That Girl Who Was Practically Flashing Your Father.
You don’t need to get a one piece, but pack a full-coverage bikini - no thong or itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini - and throw in some shorts or a sarong for when you’re lounging around.
