Dealing with a Misogynist Manager
Question: I love my job however one of my supervisors is a real old school misogynist a-hole. Most of the time I find it hilarious that there are still people like him in the world. Other times it takes every fiber of my being not to unleash on his terrible and condescending attitude. How do I deal especially since we aren't on the same level at work?
Answer: You deal by continuing to channel your inner zen. You've learned how to do this already. Don't stop.
Picture ponies prancing through your conference room. Open the break room fridge and pretend that this is happening. Or, more pragmatically, picture him as a little boy who was scolded by his teacher and is now softly weeping at his desk.
People like your supervisor say offensive things to get a rise. The best way to take the wind out of his sails is to actively ignore the backward things coming out of his mouth. Pretend that you simply didn't hear that offensive thing he said about Hilary Clinton, female drivers or equal pay. He'll have nowhere to go with his rant and will eventually realize that his provocations are better focused on Ted from Accounting.
If ignoring his insults feels like a cop-out, that's because it is. Bringing your supervisor into the 21st century is not a burden that you, his report, should have to shoulder. That's the job of his own boss or HR.
