Grace Period: The Atheist Opt-Out
Question: What should I do if I'm the only atheist at a dinner party and everyone is saying grace?
Answer: You needn't do anything at all. Atheists and those of differing religions aren't expected to play along with others religious customs, prayers or singsonging. Doing so would be disingenuous and perhaps even a little offensive.
Your goal is to avoid distracting those who do say grace. Just bow your head and use the moment to quietly reflect on what you're grateful for. Even atheists are allowed to think thankful thoughts, after all.
You can also mentally click through your weekly to-do list or guesstimate how many calories you're about to inhale. Whatever floats your boat.
Lift your head when grace is finished and pass the salt, please.
